Today was one of the very rare days that I had work. I'm an exam proctor for an international English college located in downtown Vancouver, and I work anywhere from 0-2 times a month. Anyway, since I was going to be in the area, I decided to treat myself to a raw meal at Gorilla Food.

The entrance to the restaurant was half-hidden from the view of the street, but it wasn't difficult to find. Entering the slightly subterraneous restaurant, I immediately felt the friendliness of the cafe. The kitchen workspace is big and open, and though the tables were small and few, there were already a number of customers. It seemed like a calm oasis, its raw earthy energy a nice constrast (and a good break) from the concrete city beyond its doors.

After studying the interesting menu, I decided on the Maui Waui pizza and a Choco Gorilla shake. You know, one thing I think I really like about a raw food restaurant - at least this one - is how fast food comes, since most of the menu items are easily prepared. The pizza slice was delivered immediately, and the shake came soon after. May I add now that the people there were super nice! Everyone had a genuinely friendly smile.

The Maui Waui pizza had pineapples, a marinara sauce, seasoned tenderized kale, mixed veggies, and a walnut/pine nut "cheez" topping, served on a sprouted buckwheat, sunflower seed, and flax seed crust. My general impression of this very first raw meal: pretty much awesome! The crust was amazing. I might even love it more than traditional pizza crusts. Also, I've never had raw kale - I wasn't sure whether I'd like it raw, but boy, do I like it tenderized! Whatever that means. However, I love my pineapples on pizza, so I wished there were more. On the other hand, there was too much of the nut "cheez" topping, and the nut pieces were bigger than I would have liked. Still, two thumbs up.

The Choco Gorilla shake was the owner's self-professsed favourite. It had raw cocoa, banana, dates, coconut oil, and almonds. The consistency of the shake was perfect: thick, creamy - just the way I like it. I also liked how it wasn't overly sweet and chocolatey. Also, the glass was massive. I wish I had a picture of it to show off how awesome it was. Definitely something I'll get again.

I left with a very positive feeling about raw food. I was a little nervous before, unsure of what to expect, but I was really impressed with Gorilla Food and I'll surely go back and support them again. I told my sister about it, and I must have sounded super excited because now even my sister, usually skeptical about vegetarian and vegan food, wanted to try the restaurant next time. Other things that caught my eye in Gorilla Food: the Thai wraps (collard leaves filled with seed and veggie pate, and served with raisin chutney!) and the row of raw desserts to choose from.

This post turned out longer than I expected. Part II of my birthday/end of VeganMoFo post will come tomorrow, with details about my first experience at Radha!

VeganMoFo: Chocolate Fantasies

I've been craving chocolate like crazy lately. I consider myself a chocolate fiend, but I don't just eat any old piece of chocolate. I'm quite particular about what kind of chocolate and how it gets eaten - in other words, I'm only seriously crazy about eating chocolate in certain shapes and form.

One of my most favourite form lies in the shape of this type of container:

Oh yes. Ice cream. I love ice cream, not because it is ice cream, but because it is the medium between me and my chocolate fantasies. I hardly - and I mean never - have a hankering for the ubiquitous vanilla; when we used to buy the neopolitan kind when I was a kid, I would make sure that I would get as much chocolate as possible while touching as little of the vanilla as I could, without detection from my sister. (Speaking of neopolitan: why does the chocolate portion always seem to be less than the others?)

But chocolate. Ah. The possibilities of rich and sinful flavour combinations are endless. (I have to quibble: I like my ice cream without the crunch of nuts, thank you!)

We were eating out near my favourite local food store on Thursday night, so I took the opportunity to skip in and buy some essential goodies...like the Purely Decadent ice cream pictured above. Previously, I've tried a few flavours including Peanut Butter Zig-Zag, Mocha Almond Fudge, and Chocolate Obsession. They were all good, but the flavour I was really hankering after was Chunky Mint Madness. It was my awesome luck that I finally found this very flavour combination at the food store. Now, I bought this Thursday night and it is now Monday night, and I've polished off the whole thing by myself as of an hour ago. That's how good it was. It's minty, it's chocolatey (I tried to ignore the vanilla swirls in it - I loved how chocolate outnumbered vanilla, thank you!), and I adore the squishy bits of chocolate cookies. It was like eating cookies and cream, but not, because it's chocolatey and minty and not vanilla-y and milky.

Thank you, Purely Decadent for Chunky Mint Madness! I also appreciated that it was not the rock-hard block of ice cream I experienced with the other flavours aforementioned. Perhaps it was that my freezer was actually sort of full this time. I want to try the Peanut Butter Zig-Zag another time again. With a sort of full freezer.

VeganMoFo: Snapshots

I've been making stuff - yes, I have, but you couldn't tell with the amount of blogging I've been doing for VeganMofo. The pictures I take just kind of sit there in my computer, and the words stay locked between my ears and never reach the tips of my fingers.

I've also been shooting lots of pictures of the food I make. I have a simple Canon digital camera (I couldn't tell you the model if you asked; that tells you a lot about how awesome I am at photography) and I don't think I have a lot of options when it comes to wanting to focus for a good picture - yes, I just follow the green rectangle on the screen, which doesn't materialize where I want it to most of the time. I end up taking picture after picture of the food, from different angles, playing with different camera functions, turning on more lights and opening the blinds, dressing up the "set", adjusting the food into more aesthetically appealing arrangements... If you're not a blogger/flickr/ppk.com/other such online communities foodie, you wouldn't understand what I'm talking about here.

In the end, I only have about a ton of pictures to scan through. The blurry ones and the accidental flash ones are the easiest to sort out. Those automatically get the honour of the delete button. It's the middle of the road pictures that make a hard decision. I always end up having several pictures where the difference is in the slightest - a hair's width - change in the frame. That makes life hard, at least when life's asking you to post more MoFo'ings.

This post is dedicated to the prolific life of voluptuous food photography:

One of my mother's co-workers grows apples in her backyard. Jealous! Luckily, my mother brought back a bag of them for us to eat...for me to eat. I eat about 3 of them every day. They are possibly the most delicious apples I've ever eatn. Yay for home-grown!
This one's cute; it looks kind of bashful or something:
I thought it would be clever to take photographs of the apple on top of some of my school books:
Can you tell I'm taking a Gothic fiction class? I used the gingerbread filling from VWAV, coupled with the pastry crust recipe from Veganomicon. My mother spirited the pie away the next morning, and the reviews so far are even better than the first one (from my Thanksgiving post). I'm making the pastry crust again, because I just love pastry crusts, and this time, I'm making sure I get to eat it. Preferably, eat it all.

The horridness of late-night baking and thus late-night food pictures - the lighting sucks!

So there you have it. If you felt at any time frustrated due to the repetitive nature of the line-up of pictures, then you've just felt the imposition of my own secret loathing of favouritism. What, I like all (not really) my pictures; I refuse to choose only one to share. Here's another secret: I'm slave to one of Picasa's editing features. It's called "I'm Feeling Lucky". If the pictures look off in colouring, shade, or highlighting, blame Picasa and Google for the product. I'm only the person propping the digital camera.

VeganMoFo: The Old 'Fu

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260485640297935106" style="DISPLAY: block; I can't stop gushing! I don't know what I did differently that would have made the difference, but - oh my god - it's perfect. I just made a tofu scramble - I've been pre-making food a lot lately, because it's so much more fun to cook when you feel like cooking, and to just heat up food in the fridge when you feel like kicking back. Anyway, I basically used the VWAV recipe, but with less cumin - maybe a bit more than 1/2 of what it calls for. Also, instead of firm tofu, I used traditional Asian tofu for the local market. It's much softer; it's almost silken, but not quite. My last significant change was the addition of a cornstarch-dissolved-in-soymilk mixture at the very end for an extra gooey touch. I like my tofu scrambles soft and moist. Oh, instead of mushrooms, I added corn, because I didn't like the mushroom taste last time. I realize my dislike is weird, especially since I love mushrooms in everything else. It's possible that my dislike was because of something else, so next time I'll try the mushrooms again. Yay! I love tofu scramble! I have breakfast for the next 3 days!

"Vegan Blog Survey": aren't my titles great?

I haven't been feeling very creative lately. I got sick right after Thanksgiving. It rained all week. I had a background paper due Friday that I began Thursday after dinner.

So. I Googled "vegan blog survey", hoping for something useful. And the first hit was a VeganMoFo survey apparently from this year. Score!

1. Favorite non-dairy milk? For sheer economy, my family buys plain Silk in a carton of three from Costco. But I love the chocolate-flavoured So Nice. I also really loved an almond milk I tried, but I don't recall the brand.

2. What are the top 3 dishes/recipes you are planning to cook? Yikes. I don't know if I have a plan in place for the rest of the month...or if ever.

3. Topping of choice for popcorn? Huh. I haven't had home-popped popcorn since I was a wee kid. And haven't had any popcorn for...a long time. I would choose EB and salt, I guess. I'd try nooch on it too.

4. Most disastrous recipe/meal failure? My sister and I make cookies for our extended family every Christmas, and I remember one holiday we mistook teaspoon for tablespoon and ruined a batch of cookies. It is so sad when cookies meet the dumpster.

5. Favorite pickled item? Pickled ginger with sushi and pickled cucumbers in a burger.

6. How do you organize your recipes? I have a binder for web-printed or handwritten recipes. I also have a bunch of recipes that I either bookmarked or saved on file.

7. Compost, trash, or garbage disposal? Trash, though I want to eventually learn to compost.

8. If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 3 foods...what would they be (don't worry about how you'll cook them)? That's so hard. I love all my food. If these will magically provide all the nutrients I need to survive: peanut butter, banana, and (going out on a stinky limb here) durian.

9. Fondest food memory from your childhood? My mom baking! That seems like years ago. She must have stopped when I was still pretty young - before I was 8 or 9 - but my perception of the past in time kind of sucks. She would bake chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, jam thumprints she called "bird's nest cookies", banana bread, carrot muffins...Mmm. Nowadays, baking is sporadic, and I do all of it, more or less.

10. Favorite vegan ice cream? Out of the kinds I've tried, I like the taste of Purely Decadent the best, but it gets so rock hard in my freezer. Flavours: Chocolate Obsession and Peanut Butter Zig-Zag. I really want to get my hands on Chunky Mint Madness. Also, I want vegan soft-serve.

11. Most loved kitchen appliance? You know, I really love the feel of a good strong wooden spoon.

12. Spice/herb you would die without? Basil, though it's not something that finds a place in my meals too often.

13. Cookbook you have owned for the longest time? My very first cookbook: Vegan Vittles.

14. Favorite flavor of jam/jelly? Blueberry, strawberry, or raspberry. Actually I like all jam.

15. Favorite vegan recipe to serve to an omni friend? I like to switch it up for variety, but I'll go with lasagna.

16. Seitan, tofu, or tempeh? Tofu's closest to my heart, as it's a part of my cultural background.

17. Favorite meal to cook (or time of day to cook)? Dinner, because I have all day to plan and shop for it.

18. What is sitting on top of your refrigerator? Random cardboard boxes.

19. Name 3 items in your freezer without looking. A lump of pizza dough. Cake trimmings from the cake I blogged about earlier this month. Tempeh.

20. What's on your grocery list? Cornmeal. I made cornbread today and used up the last of it. I am the queen of cornbread.

21. Favorite grocery store? Choices.

22. Name a recipe you'd love to veganize, but haven't yet. Cheesecake, but I'm spoiled with Chi Cake, so I'll probably never get around to that.

23. Food blog you read the most (besides Isa's because I know you check it everyday). Or maybe the top 3? I've been looking through too many!

24. Favorite vegan candy/chocolate? None. I'm impartial to candy - don't buy, so I don't even know which ones are vegan. If someone gave me vegan candy though, I'll eat it! As for chocolate, I prefer it in something, like a baked cookie or muffin, or a milkshake.

25. My sister disliked it, but she also said she dislikes "all things with tofu". Are you, my sister, even Asian? My mother thought it was a good thing to have, if only for the sake of having something that looked that part of the usual centrepiece. She said it made it more exciting. The texture was okay, but I couldn't really taste anything. There were tastier things on my plate...

MASHED POTATOES (VWAV - GARLIC & SPINACH VARIATION)

Yum! I can't believe how easily the potatoes fluffed, and the spinach was a nice touch.

PUNK ROCK CHICKPEA GRAVY (VWAV)

The gravy was delish, but it would have been better. It was my fault - I forgot the 1/4 cup nutritional yeast at the very end, so there was quite a distinct lemony taste that the nutritional yeast would probably have mellowed. All the diners enjoyed it though. I think my dad actually prefered the extra sour lemony flavour. Ha!

VEGETARIAN STUFFING (VEGWEB.COM)

It's for certain: homemade stuffing is much better than any storebought (including the over-salted mush inside Tofurky's Roast). The apples and raisins were nice additions to the traditional recipe. The ingredients are so varied and all-encompassing that I think that we can forgo a Tofurky next time and just eat stuffing, which is the best part anyway. I think I'll add more vegetable broth - I do like my stuffing a bit mushier. Speaking of vegetable broth, I made my own today! I've always been totally intimidated by homemade broths. I don't know why now, because it was so darn easy! I had a few vegetable scraps I'd saved up before in the freezer. So easy. So adaptable. I kept dumping in various scraps from the vegetables I was chopping up for other dishes throughout the simmering process.

CORNBREAD (THEPPK.COM)

This was the not-as-sweet Isa recipe, which I still found plenty sweet. I think I love all cornbread, so this was a no-brainer yum!

GINGERBREAD APPLE PIE (VWAV)

I got rave reviews! Our friend said it was professional, to which I said aw shucks, it was only the recipe. And really it was. I had no idea how to make a pie, and ta-da! a pie! With a pie crust that doesn't require rolling!

I didn't get indivdiual pictures, but here's a picture (with poor lighting, unfortunately) of the spread:

In the middle of mixing the stuffing ingredients, and my proud vegetable stock in the background: Stove-top action (big silver pot: mashed potatoes; saucepan in foreground: gravy):

Happy Thanksgiving, Canada!

VeganMoFo: T'was the Night Before Thanksgiving...

I'm slightly embarrassed to say that when it comes to cooking in the kitchen, more often than not, I become freakishly uptight, hyperactive, volatile. I'm often slamming cupboards open and close, banging pots, pans and knives, and crudely butchering an onion at the very last minute before the oil over the stove explodes or something. Oh yes, the kitchen is my war zone for a hour or so. Even so, there's something about a little BP-raising frenzy in my day that totally has an appeal. It's kind of exciting not knowing for absolutely sure what the result will be.

Still, I making amends with my disorganized ways. Today, I reorganized my little spice nook.

It's kind of cute if I must say so myself. I know I can't tell what the spices on the pink rack (newly stolen from our bathroom) are, but I like the little labels I made for the ones in the plastic containers. Now, I just need circular stickers to label the top of those black-capped spice bottles on the rack.

And knowing that I'll be tripping over myself cooking up the big Thanksgiving spread tomorrow, I pre-baked the pie today - the Gingerbread Apple Pie from Vegan With a Vengeance. I hope I didn't kill it in the process. When I first added the apple mixture to the crust, I refrained from adding all of the liquid, because I worried that it'll make the crust too soggy. Then with ten minutes remaining in the oven, I decided the filling looked too dry and proceeded to dump the rest of the liquid into the pie. Was that wise? I tried popping the pie in a few minutes to see if the filling will "bubble" but it never did.

My mother was a little sad that I made the pie the day before, prefering a pie fresh out of the oven, but she really loved the few slices of apple that she fished out.

Also, to minimize the frantic speed cooking that I'll probably be doing, I've written a battle plan - a couple of notes on details I should remember but will forget. I'm such a crazy cook. It should be fun tomorrow!

VeganMoFo: What Thanksgiving Used to Look Like

Thanksgiving used to be fun. I guess. "Fun" five years ago is very different from "fun" today.

In my big extended family, any big public holiday essentially was equated with getting together at my aunt's place for a big noisy buffet dinner. Oh you have a birthday and you want to celebrate it with the fam? Saturday night! Easter? Saturday night! Christmas? Saturday night! (Actually, it was more like a consecutive string of buffets for the night before Christmas Eve, Christmas Eve, Christmas, and Boxing Day. It gets tiring.) Thanksgiving was no different; there was just an extra carcass on the table, next to the glob of ham and fried pork chops.
It's different now. Yes, there's still the big buffet table with the same quintessential buffet items, but there are new faces and new wrinkles on the old ones. The kids have grown up and are less likely to show. Or less willing...

Without going into the deep and personal, or spinning off into a pitiful self-examination of my psyche, I'll just say that I do not particularly connect - or feel the need to connect - with my big extended family. That is where I am, right now. The person I am right now is going on a different path. I suppose I'm lucky? It seems to me that the youth, the young generation, in trying to find themselves, are constantly striving to be not like their parents. We will not be pinned down and be easily defined by the precedents that have been set for us.

Okay, I totally digressed, when in the same breath I said I wouldn't. Ha.

Today, I bought the most of the ingredients for the awesome Thanksgiving dinner that I'm cooking Monday evening for my parents, my sister, and my mom's friend. It's going to be entirely vegan, which I'm pretty excited about. I have a lot to be thankful for.
The menu looks like it's going to be:
+ mashed potatoes with spinach
+ chickpea gravy
+ cornbread (still iffy)
+ stuffing (maybe...)
+ tofurky roast - first time! I'm hoping that it'll turn out well. I guess I should make the iffy sides just in case tofurky sucks.
+ roasted carrots, parsnip, and onions
+ gingerbread apple pie

VeganMoFo: Go-Go Bananas

Seriously. Yeah right I'm going to try to catch up with that. I've been busy these two days with studying, school, yeah, studying. I wrote a in-class essay/midterm on the Merchant of Venice today, and on Wednesday, I have another midterm - this time for my Sociology class. Studying for that should probably also leech all my time. At least I hope so.

Meanwhile, I'll just post up some pictures of food that I've taken in recent weeks, maybe months, when I remember - or have the patience - to take a picture for you foodies. Enjoy. And thanks for all the comments so far!

My Scrambled 'Fu: with Mashed Yams:
An Amy's Burritos, which I ate a few days ago only when I was pressed for time:

At Candle 79 (NYC), the appetizer - Grilled Seitan Chimichurri with a citrus-herb marinade:

My entree - Black Bean Pumpkin Seed Burger, which I wasn't too impressed with:
My sister's entree, which was a salad special that she said tasted of flowers and that she thoroughly enjoyed:

Speaking of NYC, my favourite meal during our stay was a brunch on the second last day at Cafe Blossom. I had the scrambled tofu, which was absolutely amazing. I need the recipe. My homemade scrambled tofu stinks. I prefer a mushier, softer sort of scramble, which I guess is contrary to a lot of people's preferences, so I need to change up my tofu selecting (medium-firm instead) and tofu squishing tactics. I also don't really like the typical spice/herb blend of cumin, turmeric, etc. I don't really remember what I put in the few 'fus I've made - probably they were bastardized versions of VWAV and other popular recipes. The Cafe Blossom 'Fuwas so good, but I was too much in love with it to actually think rationally, so I have no idea what was in it, though I vaguely recall spinach. That's a start.

(Besides the scramble 'fu, I ordered a Chocolate-Peanut Butter shake and a blueberry muffin to go at Blossom Cafe, and once again, amazing. The shake, obviously, but sometimes vegan muffins can really disappoint; trust me, it was far from disappointing. I need to go back to New York, like, right now.)

(I should also mention that I am not so eager to revisit Candle 79, because I got horrible stomachaches after the aforementioned meal.)

VeganMoFo: Oreos and Cream Cake

One of my oldest friends is turning 19 next week, and to celebrate, she's hosting a big BBQ party tonight - and I'm making the cake. For 30+ people. Now, I didn't offer to make the cake because I'm a terrific baker or anything. I'm definitely not - I'm inexperienced and often impatient. (Don't fret if you're reading this and going to the party tonight! It gets better.) When I decided to make the cake, I was determined to actually work hard at making the best cake I've ever made, which wouldn't be too hard, I supposed.

The recipe I decided to use was the Cookies and Cream version of the basic Chocolate Cupcake from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. I only had a 9x13 cake pan, so I doubled one recipe twice - in other words, I made two cakes - each cake equalling two recipes of the cupcakes - and glued them together in the middle. I also decided to trim the edges to get rid of the tougher, chewier exterior. I admit though that the two cakes were not level. The first cake was a little shorter, which might have been because of the possibility of overmixing the batter. I wasn't about to get down and dirty and try to trim something like 1/8th of an inch off the top of the second cake, so I just left it at that. The next step would fix everything. Everything!

The crumb layer:The frosting! Oh how I love frosting. It really does fix everything. I doubled the recipe, which also allowed me to frost between the layers. For the exterior, I did both a crumb frosting and a normal layer of frosting to finish it off. (Yes, I have never heard of crumb frosting before researching for this cake. Damnit, I want to sound professional!)

At the end of frosting, the cake was more or less level, and I had a teeny bit of frosting to pipe something fun. That didn't turn out too well.

Looks like a little oppsies! Honestly, what does that look like to you?

Next time, I'll go the next step and make another kind of icing for the words and decorations. I was too pooped from the all-over frosting to go that extra mile, so I used leftover Oreo crumbs to sprinkle in the lettering. Not that great of a time-saving idea! The stencils took a while to make and cut out, and then the crumbs were being rebellious.

I'm still really happy with the aesthetic results of the cake. I'm a total believer in the fluffy buttercream frosting now. As for how the cake will stand the test of the BBQ party tonight, that result still awaits, as the cake is in my fridge right now and will remind there until I leave for the party in a few hours. I'm pretty sure it's going to win over all the guests though. Their sad lifeless food is going to be pale in comparison with Oreos and Cream Cake.

VeganMoFo: Green Smoothies

One of my resolutions for this month of fooding is to try something new for breakfast. I'm determined to break my hardened routine of PB&J&B sandwiches. PB&J&B has become such a habit: we share many "fond" memories together, trooping through the last of my hellish teenage years. Even so, and despite the fact - yes, it's a fact - that it may just be the best warm gooey peanut buttery sandwich that has ever seen the face of this earth, I feel that it's time I change it up a bit. It being VeganMoFo just gives my resolution that extra bit of festive sparkle. It's like the symbolic cleaning associated with Chinese New Year: sweep out the old and the monotonous, welcome in the new.

I sure did try something new today.

It's green! It's a smoothie! And it's chock full of vitamins and minerals. This sweet thing has banana, nectarine, a mix of apple and wildberry juice, big handfuls of salad mix (it needed to be cleared out of the fridge!), flaxseeds, and a dried date that I threw in at the last minute. It definitely didn't taste too "green", which I imagine wouldn't sound too palatable for many. The dried date, which I wasn't really expecting to do much, did just end up being up being chopped into chunks - it wasn't blended in, which I guess is the point of smoothies. I suppose if I wanted to add a date, I should either add a fresh date, or soak a dried one. Or was it that I shouldn't add a dried date at all and I should soak a fresh one instead? Still, I kind of enjoyed the sweet bits of date in there. It's kind of like eating an oatmeal-raisin cookie and getting to the sweet raisins parts (or even better, the chocolate chips if it's the awesome combo of oatmeal-chocolate-raisin cookie).

And a tease for what's coming up in the next (or the next) post:

VeganMoFo: Breaking Routines & Batch Cooking

As a full-time student, I find that I often don't have the time, energy, or motivation to cook a great meal. I mentioned in my last post that my parents take care of dinner. But what about lunch, or even breakfast?

Breakfast is really easy for me, because I stick primarily to eating a hearty peanut butter & jam & banana whole wheat sandwich, washed down with a chilly glass of soymilk. One thing I'm trying to do during this month of VeganMoFo is to break my regular routine, so I'm looking for different breakfast combos to try for tomorrow.

Lunch is different. Sometimes I have leftovers from yesterday's dinner to reheat; sometimes I pack a sandwich of some sorts, but I've been finding it tedious to eat another sandwich after my morning PBJB (no kidding! Yet another good reason to break up my morning routine!). Sometimes I run out of time in the morning, and I end up buying lunch at school, which varies from vegan stew at UBC's Pendulum, soup and 'wich at the Delly, a burrito in the Village, a bagel from Bernouli's, and so on. Recently, what I've been falling in love with is batch cooking. Last Saturday, for example, I cooked up a pot of chili and baked cornbread. Voila! Saturday night dinner and lunch for the next week. It's so convenient, as long as you have the individual freezing containers and the freezer space for them. I have two Lock&Locks, and several Ziplock freezables - I can divide a batch of chili, pasta, casserole, and really, most anything, between them and it's the perfect weekday lunch!

First in a weekend dinner:

The chili recipe is Joanna's Better-Than-Basic Veggie Chili, and the cornbread is from Recipezaar. Both recipes are super easy to make, with ingredients that are already in your cupboard. The only substitution I made was where Joanna's recipe called for tomato sauce, I used half the amount of tomato paste, plus equal part (to the tomato paste) water. I never have tomato sauce around, so I always use this substitution, and hey, it works!

Then as a weekday lunch:

Hey! The new VeganMoFo month! This is my first year participating, so I'm both terribly nervous and terribly excited. I've made a resolution not to overly think in my writing, and focus on the main event: the good food! And all that relates to veganism.

October is probably one of my favourite months of the year. Pumpkins, crunchy leaves underfoot, scarves, hockey season really begins, my biirrrthday... Really, October doesn't even need that spooky holiday we call Halloween. Now VeganMoFo makes the month of October even more interesting. Yay!

Because today kind of sucked in reality (sleep-deprived and, well, sleep-deprived), I'm not going to wow you with wonderful vegan meals that I cooked today. I'm one of those people who is lucky enough to have parents who cook a good square dinner everyday and insist we all sit down to eat as a family of four. Okay, there's never any "insisting" actually happening - we've always, always sat down around a table to eat dinner, so it's been a deeply embedded tradition that will probably never break as long as we kids are still around.

I somehow feel like I should stick in a picture of the four of us at the dinner table just about now! Alas, no picture exists. Also, I've never taken pictures of the dishes my parents cook for me. (Oh hey, I think I've found a potential future VeganMoFo post!) So you're probably thinking: what am I hanging around this blog for?

I know you're only looking for porn! Don't these look porntastic?

These are the Jelly Donut Cupcakes for Veganomicon. They're super easy to make, and I - whoops - "broke" one as I was transferring them from the pan to the cooling rack, because you know that "broken" cupcakes are meant to be eaten piping hot from the oven. Hell yeah they're good! If you want the true Jelly Donut look, you might want to get the most generic jam on the shelf, and stay away from any of the low-sugar stuff, because those will tend to be more watery and lighter, because that was probably why my cupcakes look like...a bursting ripe-red flower. Or an overflowing volcano. God, that picture gives me the giggles everytime.

After I scarfed down the first, I sent the rest off to my relatives to enjoy on one of their weekly Saturday dinners. I suppose my grandma took a few home with her, because a few nights later, she called and told me that she had eaten the last of the cupcakes for her breakfast, and she really liked them! It was really sweet.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://debbietlwong.blogspot.com/2008/10/hey-its-veganmofo.html' title='Hey! Here I will paraphrase to the best of my memory: We have to lop off pieces of ourselves that don't fit society, so we constantly live in a state of secret melancholy. Within the boundaries of society, we do not know ourselves. To have self-knowledge would be profoundly shattering.
Of course, it was an English Literature class, and of course, we were talking about Shakespeare and his play The Merchant of Venice. The argument the professor was making was that the character Antonio was homosexual, and that in this Shakespearean comedy, his character provided a foil to the ultimate jubilant celebrations that befall the "good Christian" characters in the end. A foil?! Oh yes. I thought Antonio was one of the good Christians?! Oh no. While Antonio is not bad or sinful in the obvious way that Shylock the Jew is portrayed, his covert homosexual nature (as the professor argues) leaves him in his own lonely orbit, a world apart from the happy lovers that decorate the end of the play. In his Venetian society, he cannot (and really, he should not) admit to his homosexual love for Bassanio. Now, is Antonio really that different from Shylock? Both cannot be his true nature: one is a supposed homosexual and the other is a Jew. Both are effectively barricaded from society because they are fundamentally deviants of the social norm. There's a good Shakespearean comedy for you: you can get the happy ending if you're "normal". Oh, and the Christians get to define normality. Yay!
So, fair readers, what's in a happy ending, a triumph? Who fits and who doesn't fit? If you're too short we will stretch you out on the rack; if you're too tall we will just lop off the parts that don't fit. That's all.

Because somehow in my head this makes perfect sense to add on at the end of a limb-lopment: I will admit that I sometimes get in over my head and go to extremes. Or in other words, I forget to lop off my daily ration of fingers and toes and whatnot. My secret self that must hide in melancholy from all the world sometimes gets too much nourishment (now is it too much university education? too much time for frivolous thinking? the internet and the horrible things that I can get my hands on?) and thus grows too large and fast. Thank God I have my sister, the pharmaceutical student, to remind me of my manners.

Oh, slow day.

I am probably the only person above the age of twelve who gets depressed when her parents are out of town. Call me dependent, needy, clingy, whatever. I don't particularly think I'm any of those (but who knows, sometimes you know yourself the least). Actually, I'm more likely to describe myself with the polar opposite: independent, headstrong, a singular organism likely to whack away at any poor guest hoping for a symbiotic relationship. So my parents have been gone a week, and what, life sucks? Am I just throwing a passive inner tantrum at being left behind on a trip to Thailand? Is it the dirty dishes that pile nightly in the sink? The groceries to shop for, the food to prepare, the responsibility of myself being piled solely on my shoulders?
All there is to do is to do everything. Each and every thing slowly, individually, methodically, silently. Each plate needs to be scrubbed clean and rinsed, dried off, and returned to its place. Stacking the pieces together, tucking the whole away. Behind closed doors.

Because when my parents are away, that leaves me more vulnerably alone.

Summer

When you're something like the age of seven, the first thing you do in school in September is write a report of what you did that summer. Those sneaky teachers. Oh they know your mind is still glazed over with visions of dripping popsicles and swimming suits and goggles. What a better way to know your new next-desk neighbour than to write - just a summary! in case they get too long, you know - about your summer vacation. And then to go around and share! Go on, share!

I'm past the age of writing down my summer in words at the start of school, or so I thought. Yet here I am trying to squeeze in a last few sentences. This is going to be tragic if I don't blog past the day I actually start a blog.

Briefly: I went to school for almost three out of the four months for a six-credit course that I had no regret doing as I really enjoyed it and hopefully got the most out of it. I lost a job at the very beginning and eventually scraped up a super casual one that pays well for the amount of time and energy I put into it (next to none) as well as it being nicely located and gets me in touch with people who I have never known in my life (bonus) and who come from all over the planet (bonus) and who are cool in the I'm-learning-how-to-speak-English-and-I'm-international-so-let's-be-nice-and-buddies! way (bonus). Makes me want to learn a new language, in a different country. I checked off an item on my list of things to do before I die when I started ballet classes at a local adult dancing centre. Ballet! I'm so terrible at it that I'm having fun. I've been hanging out with my dog. Lots. We're great pals. I did some cooking and baking. I had my wisdom teeth pulled out. I almost applied for a four-month volunteer position in Thailand next summer. Oh lookie, I went to New York!

Well it was definitely the way to end my lacklustre summer. It was hot, sunny, and the streets were teeming with people and activity. And lots of pretty buildings. If we had half as nice a building as the post office there, it'll be our storied museum. Or city hall. Also, the New York Public Library I deem to be too gorgeous to really be a library. The people sitting along the long rows were really actors paid to look the part. Wasn't Breakfast at Tiffany's filmed there anyway?

So we did the whole tourist thing, where we hit all the hot spots. Our hostel was literally steps from Times Square, and we were easily within walking distance of Central Park, Columbus Circle and Time Warner Center, Rockefeller Center, and Grand Central Terminal. I also noted that at the most, everything in Manhatten seemed like a comfortable subway/bus ride away. I couldn't help comparing the public transportation system there to the unreliable, unfulfilling system we have here. We took advantage of the subway, which seemed to take us everywhere we wanted. The diversity of New York City is awesome. You think Vancouver's diverse? It's even more so in NYC. And it's not only the people. The diversity in activity mixes into the bustle of the city, sometimes leading to ironic results. In the Financial District, I went from being coerced into being an illusionist's assistant to passing by the site of the WTC (which was going under quick construction - no time to waste and no space to spare in the Big Apple!) to visiting the memorial in St. Paul's Chapel to shopping at the giant discount department store, Century 21. We also went to attractions more likely to be filed under "arts and culture", going to the Met, the American Museum of Natural History, and the New York City Museum. You can't imagine the pace we were on in seven days! It's exhausting, yet exhilarating.

We have a lot of funny anecdotes to tell - stories with matching pictures, to boot. But I'm much too lazy to go through them all, and I'm disinclined to put up all the good stuff on the Internet. Plus, I doubt it'll be the last I see of New York, so pictures are always in the future. And I'm sure Google Image has a much better shot than I of the Empire State Building*.

I almost forgot to add that the food was amazing. I was spoiled with awesome V stuff there for a week, and it was so hard adjusting back to a normal homecooked diet. I didn't take any pictures, except for the one time we went to Candle 79 for lunch, and even though the food porn looks great, I had awful stomachaches after it, so I'll probably think twice before going there again. One thing though: Cafe Blossom (brunch) was the best meal we had there for sure! And then you must get a shake and a muffin to go.

*which we didn't go to.

Might As Well Start Anew

Today is significant in three ways:

It is the last day before school starts.

This morning, Pippin was reunited with his brothers and sisters for the first time.

I'm starting a blog.
